Free certificate of insurance (COI) checker
Upload a vendor’s or subcontractor’s certificate of insurance. In seconds you’ll see the coverage amounts, when it expires, and what might be missing compared with your requirements. No signup.
What to check on every certificate of insurance
1. Expiration dates. A certificate lists several policies, and each can expire on a different day. The earliest one is the date that matters.
2. Limits. Many businesses ask subcontractors for at least $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate general liability, plus $1,000,000 auto liability. Your contract or your own insurer sets the real numbers.
3. Additional insured. A checked “ADDL INSD” box isn’t enough on its own. The certificate itself says it “confers no rights.” Ask for the endorsement page (often CG 20 10 for ongoing work and CG 20 37 for completed work).
4. Waiver of subrogation and workers’ comp. If your contract requires them, make sure they’re shown, and that workers’ compensation isn’t blank.
5. Keep it current. Most policies renew every year. The hard part isn’t checking one certificate, it’s remembering to collect the new one from every vendor before the old one runs out.
